A true decorative element, wallpaper has been brought back into fashion today. To choose it correctly, it is necessary to know the different types of wallpaper and their characteristics.
What are the advantages of wallpaper?
Today, there are many styles of wallpaper to find the one that perfectly fits your interior. Whether it’s patterns, colors, or textures, it is now possible to find wallpapers that represent a specific universe. By covering the wall with wallpaper, it is easy to hide imperfections (holes, cracks, stains…) without going through the plastering and sanding step. Unlike paint, this type of covering does not require drying time or a second coat. So, it’s a time saver.

What are the different types of wallpaper?
Just like with flooring, making your choice can sometimes be complicated with so many models available. There are 4 categories of wallpaper on the market with different characteristics and recommendations:
- Traditional wallpaper also known as simplex: made solely of paper sheets covered with patterns or a solid color. Due to its lack of thickness, this type of paper is not recommended in humid rooms (bathrooms, kitchens). It is also not advised in rooms exposed to external light and UV rays.
- Vinyl wallpaper: this covering is particularly appreciated for its waterproofness and durability over time. The Interior Decorator Training from the European Training Center recommends it in bathrooms or kitchens often subject to humidity and splashes. This wallpaper can also be used in a child’s room due to its easy-to-clean nature. Thanks to its thickness, it resists UV rays and abrasion and can be adapted to any room in your home.
- Expanded wallpaper: just like vinyl, it is waterproof and durable. Its difference lies in its texture, which offers a greater material and thickness effect. Thanks to this thickness, the wallpaper perfectly masks irregularities on the wall and some cracks.
- Non-woven wallpaper: made of textile fibers and primarily cellulose, this wallpaper is almost considered environmentally friendly. Its second advantage is the extremely easy installation compared to others. With a layer of glue already applied on one side of the paper, you just need to apply it to the wall.
How to choose your wallpaper correctly?
To choose your wallpaper correctly, the most important thing is to project and imagine the future function of the room. Some wallpapers are not recommended in rooms with a lot of traffic, such as a child’s room. Do not hesitate to consult an interior decorator who can advise you and assist you with your wallpaper choice.
